The African State Architecture’s new exhibition opens in the Addis Ababa Museum, Meskel Square, Addis Ababa on 29 April 2023.

The exhibition is a collection of stories about how buildings shape institutions and identities in six African countries - Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

It is based on research findings from the African State Architecture team.

Nahom Teklu Bekele

The show is designed by Ethiopian architect Nahom Teklu Bekele. It consists of physical and virtual (augmented reality and web) components. The physical component is a mobile installation generated through an interactive design charrette. The augmented reality component consists of an app with video animations and an interactive character - Miss Tilla - who will guide attendees virtually through the exhibition, with material presented in English and Amharic.

The exhibition is curated by Professor Julia Gallagher and Dr Kuukuwa Manful.

It is the first in a series of exhibitions from the ASA project based in Ethiopia, South Africa, Ghana and the UK.
