Workers’ Museum in Johannesburg

Submission by Julia Gallagher

One of my favourite buildings is the Workers’ Museum in Johannesburg. During the apartheid era the building was a hostel for men who were forced to migrate long distances, leaving family behind, to come to the city for work. The museum shows how the apartheid state sustained itself by moving people around at whim, and lets visitors hear what it felt like for those whose lives were turned upside down in this way. The building is nothing special - I go for the stories.
